Do I Need a Crown?

A dental crown may be needed in cases of extensive tooth decay, fractures, large fillings (that weaken over time), or after a root canal to restore strength and prevent further damage. They’re also used for cosmetic reasons, to cover discolored or misshapen teeth, and as anchors for bridges or implants. Overall, crowns are essential for reinforcing teeth, enhancing aesthetics, and ensuring long-term dental health. Talk with Dr. Trevino today to learn if you may be a candidate for a crown.

How Do Dental Crowns Work?

When a tooth needs reinforcement or aesthetic enhancement, a dental crown is often the solution. Here’s how it works:

Preparation

The tooth is reshaped to accommodate the crown, removing any decay or damage.

Impression

An impression of the prepared tooth is taken to create a custom-fit crown. At Dr. Trevino’s office, we use digital scanning technology to take a “digital impression” — no messy impression materials required.

Temporary Crown

A temporary crown may be placed while the permanent one is being made. At our practice, however, we use CEREC technology to create same-day crowns, meaning you can complete treatment in a single visit — no temporary crown required.

Fabrication

The permanent crown is typically made from materials like porcelain, metal, or a combination. At Dr. Trevino’s office, we create customized dental crowns using state-of-the-art CEREC technology, which means you can complete treatment in a single visit!

Placement

The crown is bonded securely onto the prepared tooth using dental cement.

Adjustment

Final adjustments are made to ensure proper fit and bite alignment.

Function

Once in place, the crown restores the tooth's strength, shape, and appearance, allowing for normal chewing and biting

The Advantages of CEREC Same-Day Crowns

High-Quality Materials

CEREC crowns are made from durable ceramic materials that match the color and appearance of your natural teeth, providing a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing result.

Precision

Advanced imaging technology allows for precise measurements and customization of your crown, ensuring a perfect fit and restoration of your tooth's natural function.

Traditional Crowns vs. CEREC Same-Day Crowns

Traditionally, getting a dental crown involved multiple appointments. During the first visit, the tooth would be prepared, an impression taken, and a temporary crown placed. The impression would then be sent to a dental lab to fabricate the crown, a process that could take weeks. Once ready, a second appointment would be necessary to fit and place the permanent crown.

In contrast, CEREC same-day crowns streamline this process. After preparing your tooth, we use CEREC’s digital scanning technology to create a precise 3D model of your tooth. This model is then used to design and mill your custom crown on-site, allowing us to fit and bond your new crown during the same visit. This not only saves time but also enhances the overall treatment experience by reducing the discomfort and inconvenience associated with traditional crowns.
